Description

The Kalevala or The Kalewala is the national epic of Finland and Karelia. Elias Lönnrot collected folk songs and poetry around Karelia and East Finland for may years. He edited poems and also wrote new ones, so that the collected separate poems became one complete story. Poems were always sung in the same metre by a duo and sometimes assisted by a kantele player. Kalevala has had a large impact on Finnish culture and art. For example  Aleksis Kivi, Eino Leino, Juhani Aho, Jean Sibelius, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Einojuhani Rautavaaran and Aulis Sallinen got clearly subjects and inspiration to their work from Kalevala. Kalevala has been an inspiration for many authors and artists outside Finland too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalevala
On the card is Väinämöinen, the main character:  a shamanistic hero, bard, wise man and a teacher. He made a magical Kantele from a great pike’s jawbones. This first Väinämöinen painting is made by Swedish painter Johan Zacharias Blackstadius who worked in Finland too.
The English translation is from year 1888, made by John Martin Crawford.
