Description
Finland is the sixth most swampy country in the world. Out of the area of Finland, 15-26 % is swamp, totaling 9-10 million hectares. The numbers are an estimate based on different definitions and measurement techniques. Less than half of the swamp areas are completely untouched and the total area of protected nature reserves is 1,2 million hectares, about 13% of the swamps. Especially Northern Finland is characterized by swamp and wetland areas.
