Each region (maakunta) in Finland has a flower or a plant chosen to represent it. This symbolizes the regional flora and the nature of the region.

Prickly wild rose (direct translation is Karelian rose) is the county flower of North Karelia and it is found wild especially in Eastern Finland. Prickly wild rose bush grows to a height of 1 – 1,5 meters. It has dense prickles which are straight and needle-like on its stems. 4-5 cm wide pink flowers are separately on stems in June-July. Prickly wild rose grows in groves and other lush places such as stream banks and is used as an ornamental shrub in gardens.
