Description
The Kajaani Castle ruins on the card are located in Kainuu. The world’s northernmost stone castle is located on a small island Linnasaari in the Kajaani River, in the middle of the city of Kajaani. The castle was built by King Charles IX of Sweden, but after various phases it fell into ruin and lost its military significance when Finland became part of the Russian Empire in 1809. The castle ruins have been restored some times and the last time the castle was last extensively restored in 2001–2008.
The islet of Linnasaari and the bridge over it remained as an important crossing point of the Kajaani River. The bridge road has been improved many times and it still runs through the castle, dividing the roofless castle ruins into two parts. A footbridge leads to the castle and the castle is open to visitors free of charge all year round. Kajaani Castle ruins is protected under the Antiquities Act and it is a cultural heritage site.
