Description
Linnansaari National Park which was established in 1956 is an area consisting of many islands and water areas in Lake Saimaa. The national park is located in the Southern Savonia and Northern Savonia regions in Rantasalmi, Savonlinna and Varkaus areas, and exploring it requires going by water. On the main island of the national park, Linnansaari, there are two boat piers, an old croft and the only marked trails in the national park. The croft area is managed in traditional ways, but most of the island’s coniferous forest and groves are in a natural state.
In winter, exploring the national park area is possible even with touring skates, but in summer you will need a canoe, rowboat or larger boat. There are regular boat connections to the main island from mid-May to the end of October. One of the connections in summer 2024 was operated by the Puijo ship shown on the card. The renovated ship continued to operate in the summer of 2025 under the name Linnansaari 1.
Saimaa ringed seals and ospreys are living in the areas of Linnansaari National Park, which is why there are movement restrictions in many areas from the beginning of the year until mid-July. Remember to check where and when it is forbidden to travel and stay overnight if you are moving around the area independently!
