Description
Nuuksio National Park, established in 1994, is a national park which is located only about 30 km from Helsinki in Espoo, Kirkkonummi and Vihti regions. The area is difficult to access and it was once unsuitable for farming, and is therefore almost uninhabited. The swamp, rock and lake areas of the national park are home to numerous endangered or threatened animal, plant and mushroom species, such as the Siberian flying squirrel, the emblem of the national park. The area has several hiking trails, free-to-use campfire and camping sites, and in addition to these, paid hiker services. Nuuksio is easily accessible from Helsinki by public transport.
Nuuksio Mustalampi is a small artificial lake surrounded by forest, created by damming. This postcard photo clearly shows the lake’s special feature: floating peat mat bogs. The floating mats were separated from the ground when the water rose when the lake was formed. Floating mats have been drifting on the lake’s surface from place to place ever since. Minna from Minor Postcards took the postcard photo on the shore of the eastern campfire site of Mustalampi in the summer of 2024.
