Description

The Lyra Ring Nebula, also known as M57 or Messier 57, is located in the constellation Lyra, about 2,000 light-years from Earth. It is the remnants of an exploded star, with a white dwarf star at its center. The nebula was discovered in 1779 by the French astronomer Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix, and the central star was discovered by the German astronomer Friedrich von Hahn in 1800.

The card image looks like it was made by artificial intelligence, but it’s actually a photo taken by the James Webb Space Telescope! The image was taken with Webb’s NIRCam (Near-InfraRed Camera)  and coloration of the image has been processed to resemble a visible light image.
