Description
The elk is big, and it is indeed Finland’s largest animal. In winter, elk live in small groups, but otherwise they are usually solitary. In spring, they migrate between different types of habitats over distances of 15–25 km (or more). Elk eat small trees, shrubs, and grass-like plants, such as grain. In winter, their diet consists of twigs, such as willows, and tree bark. Dawn and dusk present the highest chance or risk of spotting elk as they move around in search of food.
The postcard photo was taken quite late in the evening in July 2013, when Ronja and Minna from Minor Postcards were returning from a national costume photoshoot. An elk crossed the road in front of the car and lingered by the roadside, making it easy for Minna to take a few photos of it.
