Description

In the Åland, you can find Sälskär lighthouse on the northern part of Hammarland on a small islet. It was built in 1868 and was the first lighthouse in Finland to be automated in 1949. It is made of bricks and the foundation is granite. The total height from the sea level is 44,5 m. Measured from the ground, it stands around 30 meters tall. The architect Axel Hampus Dahlström designed the building.

On the small island, there is a small freshwater pool resembling a lake or a pond and some small trees. The islet has also a few old unused stone structures and a small cottage, but no inhabitants. During the summer when the weather is beautiful you can take a boat there. This photo was taken on a trip like that on summer of 2021. The map on the card shows the location of the lighthouse in the Archipelago Sea.
