Description

The Globeflower, or European Globeflower (Trollius europaeus), is a perennial grass plant that grows 30-60 cm tall and blooms with bright yellow globe-shaped flowers. It is the county flower of Lapland and most common in Northern Finland, but also groves in regions further south such as Häme and Savo. Globeflowers naturally grow in northern groves, fell meadows, and riverbanks.

In the south, Globeflowers bloom as early as May, but in the northern Finland in Lapland, they bloom around Midsummer (or later), which is why they are called Midsummer flowers there. Globe flowers are used as ornamental plants in gardens, from which they can sometimes escape and spread near settlements. The flowers are popular and durable as cut flowers, but it’s worth noting that as members of the buttercup family, they are poisonous. The picking of flowers has reduced these plants in some areas, although the primary factor contributing to the decline of Globeflowers in Southern Finland is the disappearance of suitable meadows and bright forests due to changes in agriculture.
